There have been a few people who questioned why I would discuss the “Magic of Believing” book in my coaching emails. The simple answer is that I hoped it would give people a better and deeper understanding of the Bible and Faith and of the Power of God that works through His people.
In other words, if an unbeliever can accomplish great things without glorifying God, how much more can a believer accomplish by giving glory to God.
First, let me be very clear on this – It ABSOLUTELY DOES MATTER that we believe in Jesus – Jesus tells us in the Bible that “no man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). The only way to get to Heaven is through Jesus.
Here’s the problem that we have to watch out for (and why we MUST know our Bible inside and out, front to back), satan is a master at portraying partial truths.
Hang with me here for a moment…
We CAN get a successful business or house or car or just about anything else we want by simply believing for it – even if we leave Jesus/God out of the equation. And, the Bible confirms that this is true. This is a really deep subject and it would take up too much space to give an expose on it. But, just as one example of where you can see this in the Bible is in Ephesians 3: 20 where Paul talks about “according to the power that worketh in us”.
You see, God is creative power. We see His power in action in Genesis 1 where He is creating all that surrounds us now and we see glimpses of it throughout the Bible. And, God has placed a certain amount of this creative power inside of man. It is God’s will and desire that man use this creative power to build up and expand His Kingdom and to enjoy all of the fullness and goodness of life that God has for us.
Unfortunately, as we can see in verses like Romans 1:30, too many people are using the creative power that God has given them to invent evil things.
Somewhere in the course of history, man figured out that he could tap into this “creative power” that God has given him and use it to his own selfish advantage – while leaving God out of the picture.
And this is exactly what New-Age thinking is all about – except it isn’t really new age – it’s been around for a really long time.
HOWEVER, having said all of this…
Anything that is created without God being front, center, and foremost is not sustainable and will not stand the test of time.
Psalms 127:1 tells us, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
1 Corinthians 3:13 reveals, “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.”
Most importantly, things created without God won’t pass on Judgment Day…
Matthew 7:21-23 says, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
These three examples (and there are hundreds more that I could use) make it very clear to us that we are to be about “the Father’s business”. We are to be doing the will of God.
To emphasize the importance of doing God’s will:
1 Peter 4:2 says, “That he [the believer] no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.”
1 John 2:16-17 confirms this by saying, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
When we get it going as described in Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”, then we know we are on the right track – we are using the creative power (renewing of our mind) that God has given us to do the will of God and to bring glory, honor, and praise to His name and to enjoy the fullness and goodness of life that God has for us to enjoy.
So, when we are reading secular books, there will certainly be things that we should discard if they did not agree with the Bible. At the same time, if we are spiritually minded, these books can help us gain a better and deeper understanding of how Godly Faith can work in our lives.
