An Elaboration on Microsoft’s Marketing Secrets…

There are five key reasons why I believe Microsoft has been so financially successful.

1. Big, bold, aggressively pursued vision.
2. Aggressive recruitment of the smartest people
3. Drive and hard work by everyone
4. Creating win-win’s for businesses
5. Creating win-win’s for individuals

Let me now describe what I believe to be Microsoft’s marketing secrets to success. Because the first three are outside the realm of marketing, I’ll skip past them and start with the fourth one:

4. Creating win-win’s for businesses

IBM had a problem. They had a computer to sell but they didn’t have an operating system to drive their computer. And, their software people were telling them it was going to be at least two years before they could have a reliable operating system ready.

Being the sales-driven company that IBM was/is, all they needed was someone to provide them with an operating system and they could start selling personal computers right away – and gain the marketing advantage of being “first to market”.

That’s where Bill Gates came into the picture. He told IBM that he could provide them with the operating system they needed within 6 months – creating a win-win for both Bill and his dream and IBM for their goal of “first to market” personal computer dominance.

Now, IBM did make some “concessions” that seem foolish at this point. But, at the same time, the reason Bill Gates was able to get these concessions was because he really was creating a win for IBM.

On the flip side, Bill had to make several concessions too – and some of these could have really worked against him given the right/wrong circumstances. For example, Bill had to agree that when IBM had their own operating system ready, Microsoft’s DOS would be out and IBM’s operating system would be in.

From my perspective, IBM’s two big mistakes were: A) failing to realize the importance of the software side up front, B) arrogantly thinking that they could take over the software side when they were ready.

As history has shown, Microsoft out-implemented and out-executed IBM in the realm of personal computer software – because of the first three keys: vision, smart people, and hard work.

And, as history has also shown, where and when it made sense for them to do so, Microsoft has been incredibly good – far better than most – at creating win-win relationships with other businesses.

But, there was an even more important side to their marketing smartness…

5. Creating win-win’s for individuals

Prior to Microsoft Windows, the computers that commercial businesses used were big and the software that ran them was expensive.

In particular, the compilers and linkers needed to create software generally started in the $250,000 range and went up from there. Obviously, that meant that only businesses with deep financial pockets were going to be creating any software.

But then, Bill Gates came along and started telling people who were “tech-heads”, “Hey, I’ve got this new little operating system called Windows and I’ll make a deal with you…buy Windows and if you’ll buy it right now, I’ll sell it to you for half the listed price of $95 PLUS I’ll GIVE you a compiler and linker so that you can write your own software programs.

Within a year, men and women by the hundreds – maybe even thousands – were writing little software programs for Windows.

Then, Bill came back to all those people, and said, “Hey, that’s some pretty neat software you’ve written there…can I help you sell that?”

And the more Bill helped individuals create and sell their Windows-based software, the more copies of his Windows operating system he sold – and the greater his dominance became in the marketplace.

This is STILL Microsoft’s number one strategy for growing their business – and you can see this by looking at how and where they allocate their marketing dollars…their marketing budget is overwhelmingly focused on reaching tech-heads and helping them create and use more Microsoft-based or Microsoft-oriented software.

Just like with businesses, time has proven that Microsoft has been incredibly good at creating win-win relationships with individuals.

So, what can you do with all of this?

Consciously get past the tendency to think myopically and start to think bigger and broader in terms of creating win-win’s in as many places as you possibly can.

Begin thinking in terms of helping other people float their boats higher – which will cause your own boat to float higher.

Can Rich People Go To Heaven?

The following question came from a reader:

“Can a Christian be wealthy? What about it being easier for the camel going through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God? That scares me a lot!”

This concern is one that many church-goers share.

Interestingly, I’ve found that it's not a concern for Bible-readers – those who study out the Bible for themselves seeking to personally know God as He describes Himself in His Word.

As an aside, one of the most succinct settings of scriptures I've found that describes the overall nature of God can be found in Job 22:21-30. Go read it for yourself and let God talk to your heart.

Now, let me address this "eye of a needle" question...

If you study this out historically, you'll find that a "needle" was a small opening in the sides of a walled or fenced city. It was designed to give people a convenient way in and out of the city without having to go all the way around to a main gate.

However, because this represented a "security breach" these openings were made smaller so that they could be easily defended in the event an enemy attacked. Because these openings were smaller, a camel had to get down on its knees in order to get through the opening.

So in fact, Christ gave a great analogy for how most people deal with and react to money. Let me restate what Christ was saying like this:

“It’s easier for a camel to get down on its knees and crawl through a small hole than it is for most people to overcome the temptation and desire to lift themselves up rather than God and money is the best way they know to lift themselves up – because to them, money is power, recognition, and attention.”

This reveals the real question…

“Where do you want the power to go?”

If you are the kind of person who wants to bring power to yourself, then for you, money IS bad.

Or, more accurately, you’ve not yet really sold out to Christ because Galatians 5:24-26 says:

“And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.”

Think about those scriptures. Can you see a person who is living their life according to these scriptures having a problem with money?

I don’t think so!

In Psalms 62:11, we read that "power belongeth unto God". The person who is sold out to Christ WANTS to give power, glory, honor, praise, thanksgiving, and increase to God.

But a funny thing happens when you really sell out and give all to God…

If you’ll consider the rest of the scriptures about the “camel” and the “eye of the needle” (Matthew 19 and Mark 10), you’ll see that Jesus goes on to tell the audience that those who do "forsake riches" will be given 100 times more riches in this world and life everlasting.

What does that mean?

It means that it takes Faith in God to become a Millionaire for Jesus - someone who has the financial ability and time freedom to be a servant in God's Kingdom - and God always rewards faith both financially and spiritually. (Go read through the the Bible if you don't believe me.)

On the other hand, it takes no faith to be poor - just go with the flow and you'll be poor.

Hebrews 11 lets us know that "without faith it is impossible to please him [God]". Jesus asked this question in Luke 18:8:

“when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?”

The other thing that's interesting about this camel story is that Christ was talking to wealthy people - and you can tell that from the response they give him and the follow-up conversation that ensues. If they had been poor people, their response would have been quite different.

You see, contrary to popular opinion, most of the disciples were wealthy men. If you look at Peter and his brothers, you'll find that they were business owners. They were ship owners. They didn't own log rafts or little row boats. They owned ships. Ships have always been something that only extremely wealthy people have the means to own.

As a different example, consider at Christ's crucifixion he had on a set of clothes that were so nice the soldiers drew lots for it. Now, if he had been wearing a "poor" persons clothes, do you think these soldiers would have wanted them? Of course not! In today's terms, Christ had on the equivalent of an Armani suit and the soldiers recognized its value and wanted to keep it.

Now, consider this... In Luke 16:13, we read, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” It is my observation that many people think they are serving God when in fact, they are serving “mammon” (money).

Why do I say this?

I say this because I continue to see people who are financially BOUND to their job. They don’t make decisions based on what God’s will is or what God’s purpose is for their life. They make their decisions based on money – usually their lack thereof.

So I ask you, if you are making virtually all of your decisions based on money, who are you serving?

The fact is, if God were to speak to most people and ask them to go do such and such, they couldn’t do it because they are financially obligated and bound.

Let me wrap this up…

According to the Bible, money IS a good thing and God wants to give it to us if we’ll use it as a tool to love people and to build up and expand His Kingdom. And, while we are doing these “good works”, God in turn gives us the goodness and fullness of life to enjoy.

There are many, many different scriptures I could use to back up what I just said but for the sake of space, I’ll only use one – 1 Timothy 6:17-19 which says:

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

One last question for you…

Based on these scriptures here in 1 Timothy, how are you going to lay up store for yourself a good foundation so that you can lay hold on eternal life if you don’t have money?

I'm not at all saying you have to have money to be saved. But, I am saying that being involved in good works does require money - and the more money you have, the more good works you can be involved in.

What’s The Difference Between God’s Way and New-Age Thinking?

There have been a few people who questioned why I would discuss the “Magic of Believing” book in my coaching emails. The simple answer is that I hoped it would give people a better and deeper understanding of the Bible and Faith and of the Power of God that works through His people.

In other words, if an unbeliever can accomplish great things without glorifying God, how much more can a believer accomplish by giving glory to God.

First, let me be very clear on this – It ABSOLUTELY DOES MATTER that we believe in Jesus – Jesus tells us in the Bible that “no man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). The only way to get to Heaven is through Jesus.

Here’s the problem that we have to watch out for (and why we MUST know our Bible inside and out, front to back), satan is a master at portraying partial truths.

Hang with me here for a moment…

We CAN get a successful business or house or car or just about anything else we want by simply believing for it – even if we leave Jesus/God out of the equation. And, the Bible confirms that this is true. This is a really deep subject and it would take up too much space to give an expose on it. But, just as one example of where you can see this in the Bible is in Ephesians 3: 20 where Paul talks about “according to the power that worketh in us”.

You see, God is creative power. We see His power in action in Genesis 1 where He is creating all that surrounds us now and we see glimpses of it throughout the Bible. And, God has placed a certain amount of this creative power inside of man. It is God’s will and desire that man use this creative power to build up and expand His Kingdom and to enjoy all of the fullness and goodness of life that God has for us.

Unfortunately, as we can see in verses like Romans 1:30, too many people are using the creative power that God has given them to invent evil things.

Somewhere in the course of history, man figured out that he could tap into this “creative power” that God has given him and use it to his own selfish advantage – while leaving God out of the picture.

And this is exactly what New-Age thinking is all about – except it isn’t really new age – it’s been around for a really long time.

HOWEVER, having said all of this…

Anything that is created without God being front, center, and foremost is not sustainable and will not stand the test of time.

Psalms 127:1 tells us, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

1 Corinthians 3:13 reveals, “Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.”

Most importantly, things created without God won’t pass on Judgment Day…

Matthew 7:21-23 says, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

These three examples (and there are hundreds more that I could use) make it very clear to us that we are to be about “the Father’s business”. We are to be doing the will of God.

To emphasize the importance of doing God’s will:

1 Peter 4:2 says, “That he [the believer] no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.”

1 John 2:16-17 confirms this by saying, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

When we get it going as described in Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”, then we know we are on the right track – we are using the creative power (renewing of our mind) that God has given us to do the will of God and to bring glory, honor, and praise to His name and to enjoy the fullness and goodness of life that God has for us to enjoy.

So, when we are reading secular books, there will certainly be things that we should discard if they did not agree with the Bible. At the same time, if we are spiritually minded, these books can help us gain a better and deeper understanding of how Godly Faith can work in our lives.

Two quotes...

“As a result of the negative, painful, and shameful experiences of our childhood, we become afraid to participate, afraid to go after those things we truly want and desire. We become afraid of rejection, looking foolish, losing face, and being vulnerable and hurt by others. As a result of these fears, we become passive. We settle for less than we really want and we sit in judgment of others who are getting what we want.”

“Human beings seem driven by the need to make up a meaning for every fact and every event. The truth is that all facts are just facts and all events are meaningless. You are the one who makes up the meaning, and once you make the fact or event mean something, it becomes an unexamined box that can limit and disempower you.”

These two quotes are by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen

Who am I?

I am your constant companion.

I am your greatest helper… or your heaviest burden.

I will push you onward… or drag you down to failure.

I am completely at your command.

Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me, and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.

I am easily managed; you must merely be firm with me.

Show me exactly how you want something done, and after a few lessons I will do it automatically.

I am the servant of all great men.

And, alas, of all failures as well.

Those who are great, I have made great.

Those who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine.

Plus, the intelligence of a man.

You may run me for profit, or run me for ruin; it makes no difference to me.

Take me, train me, be firm with me and I will put the world at your feet.

Be easy with me, and I will destroy you.

Who am I?

I am a HABIT!

How To Spend Your Days And Years…

Here is a jewel for you…

Job 36:11 reveals: “If they obey and serve him [God], they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

Isn’t God great? How wonderful it is to serve the Lord and abound unto every good work all while enjoying his bountiful blessings.

Today, I simply want to express my thankfulness to God for His goodness, His mercy, His health, His providence, His peace, and His salvation through Christ.

A Powerful Tool Called Visualization...

The following is derived from the writing of Genevieve Behrend:

Visualizing is the great secret of success.

Deliberately picture your desire and carefully examine your picture.

When you can visualize your hearts desire and hold it with your will, it attracts to you all things requisite to the fulfillment of that picture by the law of attraction.

The conscious use of this great power attracts to you multiplied resources, intensifies your wisdom and enables you to make use of advantages which you formerly failed to recognize.

Hurry is fear and consequently destructive.

The Art Of Liberation…

Lord God, You are my Lord and I am Your Servant. I thank you for Your mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation unto me.

All that I have, You have given unto me and I thank You for it.

All that I am, You have made me and I praise You for it.

All that I do is to bring glory, honor, praise, thanksgiving, and increase unto You. Thank you for using me in Your will and Your way.

Lord God, You are in charge of my affairs and my business. You are in charge and I report to You. I take my direction from You. Because You are in charge and because You cannot fail, and because I take my direction from You, I cannot fail.

When I feel nervous or scared, that’s when I know I have stepped out of my position and tried to take control away from You. When I feel afraid or upset, that is your signal to me that I need to give control back to You and follow Your direction with full confidence and trust.

In You Lord do I move, breath, and have my being. In You Lord, I am a Millionaire For Jesus abounding unto every good work.

Thank You Lord for the great and wonderful things that You are doing through me.

Amen.

What Do You Think Of This Man’s Perspective?

The following comes from Robert Proctor:

Prosperity is the manifestation of big, exciting, service-oriented goals. The fact is, there is no virtue in poverty and no sin in great wealth.

One of the ideas you must free yourself from is that there is virtue in poverty. That could not be true.

George B. Shaw once said, “It is a sin to be poor.”

You know that sin is the transgression of the law.

You also know that money is a reward received for service rendered.

Therefore, if you are in a profit-making enterprise and you are earning very little money, you must not be providing much service. The law says, “Give and you will receive.” If you are not receiving much, you are not giving, and that is a sin.

Therefore, Shaw’s statement is accurate – it is a sin to be poor.

A Warning For Men

Stay with me to the end now because the following may be having a huge LIMITING impact on your ability to grow and increase your WEALTH

Matthew 5:28 – “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Jesus did not tell us not to lust after other women just because He didn’t want us to have any fun. He told us this because He wanted the BEST for you and I and because He understood the severe consequences of lust.

What are the consequences?

Well, there are actually quite a few consequences described in the Bible. However, we are only going to concern ourselves in this setting with the one that pertains to MONEY.

Let’s take a look…

Job 31:1 - "I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?"
Job 31:9 - "If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;"
Job 31:11 - "For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges."
Job 31:12 - "For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would ROOT OUT ALL MINE INCREASE."

These scriptures make it clear what we are to refrain from:

  • Sexual fantasies about some person you aren’t married to
  • The advances of a whorish woman
  • Seeking a sexual relationship with someone you aren’t married to

Why? Because the consequences are two-fold:

  1. To do so becomes a mental wildfire that eats away at you until eventually you will start trying to act it out in reality and it completely destroys you, your home, your career, your life, and everything that is important to you.
  2. God’s curses your financial situation and removes your ability to achieve financial increase.

Am I talking to you?

Can you now see why your success has consistently been just out of reach and why you’ve never been able to get ahead?

Here’s the three-part solution...

Part one of the solution can be found in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Get on your knees and confess your sin to Jesus Christ and ask Him to forgive you and cleanse you and to give you the power to overcome this sin.

Part two of the solution was in Job 31:1, “I made a covenant with mine eyes”. You must determine in your heart – you must make up your mind – that you are going to control what your physical eyes are going to look at and what your “mental” eyes are going to dwell upon.

Part three of the solution is to continuously quote to yourself Psalms 101:3, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.

PUT AWAY the pornography.

PUT AWAY the TV and the movies with nudity, sexual themes and sexual innuendos.

I know that in our society, this can be a challenge but you can do it – you MUST do it – if you want your FORTUNE to INCREASE.

Instead, put your focus, your attention, and your attraction upon the companion you are married to and let God bless your LIFE and your FINANCIAL SITUATION.

Bottom line, don’t let your eyes and your imagination take away your fortune and destroy your life and everything that is really important to you. Rather, choose to be a Millionaire For Jesus.

Are you acting like a Lobster?

"A lobster when left high and dry among the rocks, has not instinct and energy enough to work his way back to the sea, but waits for the sea to come to him. If it does not come, he remains where he is and dies, although the slightest effort would enable him to reach the waves, which are perhaps within a yard of him. The world is full of human lobsters: Men stranded on the rocks of indecision and procrastination, who, instead of putting forth their own energies, are waiting for some grand billow of good fortune to set them afloat." -- Dr. Orrison Swett Marden.

Look at what the Lobster does... it waits.

How many people do you know who are waiting for "luck" to turn on them? Are you one of those people?

Look at the phrase, "the slightest effort would enable him".

The lobster wouldn't even have to do anything fantastic, grandiose, marvelous, or spectacular. It just needs to put forth a "slight" effort.

Are you putting forth even a slight effort to become a Millionaire For Jesus?

Spend some time really thinking about and meditating upon this quote. Let it really register in the very core of your being. Let God talk to your heart.

This is what I’m talking about…

I just heard a true story that exactly illustrates what it means to be a Millionaire For Jesus.

A small church on the eastern seaboard started an enhancement project on their church. In all of their excitement over the project, they got a little over-zealous in fixing up their church. By the time they were finished, they had a $120,000 note at the bank that they weren’t sure how they were going to pay.

The pastor of the church went to the Lord in prayer, repented for their over-zealousness and asked for help. The Lord dealt with this pastor that if he and his church would help build up some other churches, then the Lord would take care of this church’s debt.

So, this small church went to work helping other churches. The next thing they know, a man walks into their church, tells them that the Lord laid it on his heart to write the church a check for exactly $120,000.

Let me ask you, who loses in this story?

Well the answer is that no one loses. The small church helped out other churches. The small church enhanced its appearance which can only help their church grow, and the wealthy man got a nice tax write-off.

Do you want to be that person who writes big checks that result in the expansion of God’s Kingdom?

If so, then decide that you too are going to become a Millionaire For Jesus.

This is what caused me to decide to become a Millionaire For Jesus…

There was a certain young couple who felt the call of the Lord on their lives to be missionaries to Mexico. Responding to this call, they forsook everything that is important to a young man and woman and went to Mexico to do a work for the Lord.

Within a couple of years, the Lord had blessed their work to the point where they really needed to build a church.

So, this young couple returns to America and starts traveling around to various churches across the country trying to raise the $12,000 they needed to build a church in Mexico.

Eventually, they arrived at the church I attend. They shared their story, they showed their pictures, they provided the proof that they were legitimate and the references of people who our church knew who could vouch for them and their missionary work, and then the offering was taken…

And we all gave…

To the tune of about $350. Just enough to purchase the gas and food they would need to get to the next church – where hopefully, they would get a better offering.

I can’t fully explain why, but it was like a knife went through my heart when I heard how small the offering was.

But, I couldn’t blame anyone else in our church for the small offering because I wasn’t in any better of a financial position to help this young couple than they were.

The thought of this young couple driving all over the United States trying to raise a measly $12,000 kept rolling over and over in my mind for weeks and weeks…

I mean think about it. This young couple had set aside all of their personal dreams for the Kingdom of God and they couldn’t find anyone who could help them.

After their visit, it seemed like every time I read the Bible, I would see and discover something new relating to the finances of God’s people. I soon realized that it was God’s will that His people be in a position where He can use them to do His will and His work when He wants them to.

I realized that every church needs to have at least one wealthy person in their midst. I realized that having financial capability is just as much of a God-given calling as being called to be a missionary is.

I responded to the call. I made a decision. By the help and grace of God, I was going to change my situation so that I could write a check to cover whatever need the Lord laid on my heart.

Today, Glory be to God, I am in that position!

By the way, there was a happy ending for the young missionary couple… a big church out in California took up an offering that was enough to purchase all of the necessary building supplies and then they drove a big bunch of their men down to Mexico to build the church.

Does this story strike a chord within you? Do you feel the call to become a Millionaire For Jesus? If so, decide to become one to the Glory of God. Make it an absolute committment between you and God.

Why didn't he do it?

It absolutely amazes me how people resist doing things that will benefit them.

Take for example, one of my clients. About a month ago I gave him a simple idea that I estimate would make him between $750 and $1,000 per day. All he had to do was make a very simple change to an existing process he used with his customers.

It was as "easy money" as you will ever see.

Today, I asked him how the idea was working out. He mumbled something about it was a "really great idea but he just hadn't done anything with it".

This is a business person who needs the money and he has cost himself between $23,000 and $30,000 for no known reason.

Why would he do this?

Or, a bit closer to home... why aren't you doing the things that you know can benefit you?
